In a town full of lawyers how do you find a good one?

Buying a house, writing a will, getting in an accident, or being charged with a crime. These are all times we need a lawyer. Lawyers generally specialize so not all attorney are equally good at every type of case. How do you find one that's right for you at the price you can afford? Recommendations are one way. Ask a friend who had a similar legal problem if they were satisfied. Did the lawyer return phone calls? Was the fee reasonable? There are free resources to help you find or check the background of a lawyer. Many Local Bar Associations have lawyer referral lists divided into by areas of expertise. Law Schools in your area may have clinics that provide free legal services, and if you're on a low income you may qualify for legal aid, or be assigned a public defender in a criminal case. If you can afford to hire a lawyer, interview a few. A good lawyer won't charge you for your first meeting. The lawyer benefits as well. They are trying to determine what they can accomplish for you and what the case is worth. I'll tell you what questions you can ask a lawyer to help you find the right one for you in my next report.
